Roundtable Discussions
We will have 5 or 6 members as leaders, one at each table of 7 people. Leaders will lead the discussion about a topic for 15-20 minutes. When the time is up the 7 people move to the next table. With 6 tables, the program will be about 1-1/2 hrs.
Discussions may include topics such as: Mulching, fertilizing, dividing and planting, pest and disease control, soil preparation, Hostas that have done well in your garden, garden photography, companion plants, preparation of a leaf for a hosta show, garden design, hostas in containers, new hostas for 2011 and where to get them, or any hosta garden related topic.
We need volunteers! If you would like to be one of these 5-6 leaders, please let Phyllis Weidman know by no later than January 31st at pow1031@gmail.com. |

Annual Hosta Auction - This year we have a large lot of cherished hostas and companion plants donated by members, Martha and Lamar Karlovetz. They have permanently moved to their home in Florida and donated their hosta collection to the St. Louis Hosta Society. Their very generous donation is much appreciated.
Let's make this year's auction for the sale of those special or rarer select hostas from your garden. Pot up early, label, and drop off at any officer's home or bring them to the auction. Bring some friends and your checkbook - it will be a fun auction! |

"Native Plants" presentation by Joan and Larry Hummel. Meeting will take place at Shaw Nature Reserve, Gray Summit, MO. We will meet at the Visitors Center. [Admission is free with Missouri Botanical Garden membership. Otherwise, the cost is $3 ($2 for seniors). The Society will pay all admission fees.] From the Visitors Center, we will drive the short distance to the Whitmire Garden. There are restroom facilities available, plus the nearby air-conditioned manor house is open in case anyone needs to get cooled off. There are many benches where you may rest and plenty of shade. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring insect repellant if you wish, and bring a cold drink (no hospitality available). Click here for directions. |

Special Guest Speaker - Bob Solberg will present "How to Grow your Best Hostas". Bob is a nationally known lecturer on the subject of hostas and author of many articles on hostas. Bob and his wife, Nancy, are the owners of Green Hill Farm, a wholesale and retail nursery. He is a world-reknowned hybridizer and has introduced more than 50 hostas to date and plans to add approximately five to that number each year. ‘Guacamole’, introduced in 1994 and Hosta of the Year in 2002 is probably his best known cultivar and is probably in your garden. ‘Orange Marmalade’ PP#16,742 is his first patented hosta. Hostas ‘Corkscrew’™, ‘Ginsu Knife’™, ‘Baby Blue Eyes’™, ‘Cracker Crumbs’™, and ‘One Man’s Treasure’™ are some of his better known introductions. He will bring some plants to sell, depending on what looks good that time of year. Don't miss this opportunity to meet Bob and hear his presentation! |

Special Guest Speaker - Van Spurgeon, Master Gardener. Please join us for Van's presentation about landscape design.
Van grew up as a farmer in Oklahoma where his love for gardening got its start from his father and grandfather. He received his certification as a Master Gardener in 2001. He has been an adult educator, entrepreneur, and businessman. He has volunteered for the Missouri Botanical Garden since 1998 and also volunteers at Flora Conservancy of Forest Park. He is a member of the St. Louis Master Gardener Advisory Committee and chairperson for the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau. He also is a Landscape Garden Advisor to the Shriners Hospital for Children since 2004. |
