2009 Calendar of Events

Feb. 15 Annual Pot Luck - The club will provide sandwiches and drinks. Members please bring the following: if your last name begins with A-M desserts, N-Z side dishes or salad. DVD presentation of 2008 AHS national convention. Club plant orders due. List of club plants included in Feb. newsletter. Extra order forms will be available at the meeting. Payment is due with your order.
Feb. 22 Plant Society Membership Information Day at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Beaumont Room. Visit this informative event to learn more about other local plant societies. 9 am-5 pm
April 19 Vendor Day and Club Plant Pick Up. Please join us for some early season garden shopping! We have a great variety of vendors lined up - bring a friend or two and your checkbook. Club plants will be available for pick up. If you cannot pick up your plants, please make arrangements to have someone pick them up for you.
May 31 Hypertufa trough building demonstration and Garden Walk , Watch a demonstration on making hypertufa troughs. This event will be held at Jolly Ann Whitener's home (10 Oak Hollow Drive, St. Peters, MO 63376). See May newsletter for more info and directions.
June 6 St. Louis Hosta Society Plant Sale, Missouri Botanical Garden, Orthwein Room. The plant sale is one of our society's biggest fund raisers. Drop off your plant donations at any society officer's home in advance or bring them to the Garden on Saturday morning between 7am-9am. Sale is open from 9am to 5pm. Please contact Pat Payton (volunteer coordinator) to volunteer an hour or two of your time.

Nancy and Arlie Tempel have graciously volunteered to open their beautiful hillside garden for our members enjoyment instead. July 19 Annual Hosta Auction - Pot up your plants early! The annual auction is one of two events that fund our society’s yearly activities and make the publication of our newsletter possible. Divide that large hosta clump and dig out part of those ever expanding perennials. Pot a piece, insert a label and bring it with you to the Society’s July 19th auction. Bring your checkbook. Bring your friends. Be the highest bidder. Take home a plant that you’ve been wanting!

Garden Walk - Rick and Joan Clarkson's Garden (14 Hebner St., Alton, IL 62002, Phone 618-462-2540). The Clarkson's have invited us to visit their garden for an evening of hostas and pot luck. Rick will grill hot dogs and hamburgers and we, the invited guests, will bring a dish of our choice to share with other members. Bring a lawn chair, your beverage of choice and side dish or appetizer. See Special August newsletter for more info and directions.

Special Guest Speaker - Mike Shadrack will join us to present a program on mini hostas. Watch for more info in upcoming newsletters.

Special Gathering - Arlie and Nancy Tempel are hosting a gathering at their home to welcome our special guest speaker, Bob Solberg, to St. Louis. NEW EVENT!

Special Guest Speaker - Bob Solberg will present "How to Grow your Best Hostas". Bob is a nationally known lecturer on the subject of hostas and author of many articles on hostas. Bob and his wife, Nancy, are the owners of Green Hill Farm, a wholesale and retail nursery. He is a world-reknowned hybridizer and has introduced more than 50 hostas to date and plans to add approximately five to that number each year. ‘Guacamole’, introduced in 1994 and Hosta of the Year in 2002 is probably his best known cultivar and is probably in your garden. ‘Orange Marmalade’ PP#16,742 is his first patented hosta. Hostas ‘Corkscrew’™, ‘Ginsu Knife’™, ‘Baby Blue Eyes’™, ‘Cracker Crumbs’™, and ‘One Man’s Treasure’™ are some of his better known introductions. He will bring some plants to sell, depending on what looks good that time of year. Don't miss this opportunity to meet Bob and hear his presentation!

March 9 Special Guest Speaker - Van Spurgeon, Master Gardener. Please join us for Van's presentation about landscape design.
Van grew up as a farmer in Oklahoma where his love for gardening got its start from his father and grandfather. He received his certification as a Master Gardener in 2001. He has been an adult educator, entrepreneur, and businessman. He has volunteered for the Missouri Botanical Garden since 1998 and also volunteers at Flora Conservancy of Forest Park. He is a member of the St. Louis Master Gardener Advisory Committee and chairperson for the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau. He also is a Landscape Garden Advisor to the Shriners Hospital for Children since 2004.

July 27 Annual Hosta Auction - Pot up your plants early! The annual auction is one of two events that fund our society’s yearly activities and make the publication of our newsletter possible. Divide that large hosta clump and dig out part of those ever expanding perennials. Pot a piece, insert a label and bring it with you to the Society’s July 27th auction. Bring your checkbook. Bring your friends. Be the highest bidder. Take home a plant that you’ve been wanting. But most of all socialize, share your convention experiences and join your fellow society members for an afternoon of fun.

Sept. 21

Meeting will be held at the Missouri Botanical Garden. We will meet in the Beaumont Room at 1:00 pm and we will also walk around the garden. Wear walking shoes and dress for the weather.
Oct. 12
Special Guest Speaker - Mike Miller will join us to present a program on the historic Climatron and its construction, some seasonal information and a question and answer session.  The meeting will be held at the Creve Coeur Government Center at 1:00 pm.  This would be a great time to have all your gardening questions answered by Mike.  Please join us!

Dec. 7

Holiday Party - Join us at the Creve Coeur Government Center for a festive afternoon with friends and lunch catered by At your Fingertips Catering. Cost is $5.00 each for members and significant other. Price is $10.00 each for non-members. Cash bar. Reservations are required by Nov. 14. Please mail your check payable to the "St. Louis Hosta Society" to Pam Wolkowitz, 6434 Oak Crest Rd., Hillsboro, MO 63050 or bring your cash or check to the Oct. 12 meeting to make your reservation.
